STRATEGIES Monitoring Biodiversity

WCS-Congo > Conservation Strategies > Monitoring Biodiversity

To be able to manage wildlife effectively, we first need to understand the ecological needs of different species, and appreciate how they use their environment. Lessons learned from this research are then used to formulate new ways of conserving wildlife and wild places.

WCS-Congo researchers are currently helping the Government of Congo to map the biodiversity of the Bateke Plateau, with the eventual goal of creating a national park in the area; survey teams have traversed the proposed national park, collecting data on the presence of all large mammals, as well as indicators of human activities, and this information will be used to advise the government on the feasibility of gazetting the area as a national park.
