Project History
The European Union has been actively supporting conservation in the Odzala-Koukoua Landscape since 1992 through their funding of the ECOFAC program in collaboration with the Government of Congo. ECOFAC's efforts have largely concentrated on Park management in the south with a base in Mbomo, Cuvette Province. Since the Park's extension in 2001 from c. 300,000 ha to 1,350,000 ha, ECOFAC has had inadequate resources to expand management coverage to the northern block.
ECOFAC and WCS have had a long history of collaborative efforts in the landscape including land cover mapping and monitoring, wildlife census methodology development, and joint operations toward protection of the northern sector of the Park. The WCS field veterinary program has also worked closely with the ECOFAC program by looking for ways to better understand and reduce the threat of Ebola to humans and apes and other wildlife.
