Study Site & Schedule

The Goualougo Triangle Chimpanzee Project is the only site in central Africa where researchers have successfully conducted prolonged observations of the central subspecies of chimpanzee. This remote study area encompasses 380 km2 of largely pristine lowland forests situated on the southern boundary of the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in northern Congo. The Goualougo Triangle includes twelve chimpanzee communities that have had little if any exposure to humans and provides an ideal setting to study the ecology and behavior of several social groups within an intact ape population. Research findings have already shown that insights from this site-based research project have the potential to change our perception of chimpanzees, and emphasize the importance of continuing to protect the remaining forests of the Congo.
