Site-Based Conservation

The bai complex of Mingingi, Mabale and Bonye is situated in the north of the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in northern Congo, and is an important area for forest elephant conservation and research. The presence of a permanent research camp plays an important role in the conservation of the national park, as it provides additional surveillance coverage and is a deterrent to poaching. This is particularly important in this zone, as this is a sensitive area for illegal human activity. Bonye and Mabale research camps therefore work in close cooperation with anti-poaching units operating within the area. The camps are also situated in a key position to assist with communications and logistics between the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park's main base camps at Bomassa and Makao, and the anti-poaching bases situated in the study area.
