Forestry Management Planning

Congolese law stipulates that exploitable forest should be divided up into Forestry Management Units (FMUs), with the logging schedule and rules defined in a management plan.

The management plan includes the information necessary to plan for sustainable forestry, including data on the area's natural resources (trees, wildlife and non-timber forest products) and human populations. Among other things, the management plan defines the areas within a concession that will be devoted to logging, to community development, or that will be set aside for habitat conservation.

The Kabo FMU became the first forestry concession in the Republic of Congo to have a management plan, with adoption of the plan by the government of Congo in April 2006. With its adoption, the Kabo management plan gave official recognition to the wildlife management system developed by PROGEPP, including the implementation of community hunting zones and the important role played by wildlife law enforcement.
